GAVA works closely with the elementary and middle schools in the 78744 and 78745 area (there is no high school within the zip codes) to ensure that every student has access to healthy food and physical activity throughout the school day.
GAVA's School Organizer works with 10 area public schools to develop Coordinated School Health (CSH) teams. These CSH teams are made up of teachers, administrators, parents, nonprofit partners, and community stakeholders. They develop evidence-based action plans to meet student health needs throughout the school year.
Our work over the past few years has encouraged eight GAVA schools to offer healthy after-school meals, nine schools to install salad bars, and ten schools to display messaging materials from the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) toolkit. We have helped schools build community gardens, collaborate with our Healthy Corner Store Initiative, and celebrate wellness at school health fairs. Many GAVA schools are also increasing implementation of GoNoodle, an interactive activity break software, and physical activities during morning assemblies. These activities combined have increased the students' overall physical activity time by 25-30 minutes each school day.
The Austin Independent School District also integrated 30 new healthy recipes into their food service, helping children eat healthier during the school day.
