Coordinated School Health

GAVA works closely with Austin Independent School District, focusing on the elementary, middle and high schools in 78744 and 78745 to ensure that every student has access to healthy food and physical activity throughout the school day.

GAVA's School Sector Organizer works with 11 area public schools to strengthen and activate Coordinated School Health (CSH) teams. These teams are made up of teachers, administrators, parents, nonprofit partners, and community stakeholders. They develop evidence-based action plans to meet student health needs throughout the school year.

Our work over the past few years has encouraged six GAVA schools to offer breakfast-in-the-classroom, nine schools to install salad bars, and 12 schools to display messaging materials from the Coordinated Approach to Child Health (CATCH) toolkit.

We support community gardens, improved menu options on after school meals, and dynamic school health fairs that engage community leaders.

GAVA’s convening and training of principals and CSH chairs has also increased implementation of GoNoodle, an interactive activity break software that incorporates required lessons, and increased physical activities during morning assemblies.

Combined, these efforts have increased students' overall physical education and activity time by an average of 25-30 minutes each school day.
